Nintendo Co's Wii video game system outsold Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 in Japan by 3-to-1 for the month of Jan., magazine publisher Enterbrain said Tues.
The Japanese video game magazine publisher said Nintendo sold 405,000 Wii units in Jan. compared to 148,000 PS3 units in the same period.

Nintendo released Wii in Japan on Dec. 2, weeks after Sony dropped the PS3 to the region on Nov. 12.

The sales figures are the result of week-to-week sales that have pit Wii interest ahead of the PS3.

Media Create Co. last week reported that the Wii outsold the PS3 4-to-1 between Jan. 22 and Jan. 28, representing a solid attraction to the motion-sensing system.

To date, Nintendo has sold 3.19 million Wii units worldwide, compared to Sony's 2 million units PS3 units sold in global markets.

Wii has sustained similar momentum in the states where the machine remains sold out in most U.S. retail locations. Meanwhile, demand has simmmered for the PS3, which can be located more easily than Wii.

Nintendo and Sony expect to ship 6 million units of their respective game machines by fiscal Mar. 2007.
