Why is the Xbox 360 Still Outselling PS3 in North America?

xbox_slim_icon.jpg

Sony has had a tremendous year with its Playstation 3 console. Thanks to a renewed marketing push, a series of blockbuster exclusives and a very strong E3 conference, the company looks set to dominate retail once again in this console generation. But despite all of the great headlines, why do sales of the PS3 continue to lag behind Microsoft's arguably under-powered console?

This past month the Xbox 360 managed to outsell Sony's competing Playstation 3 console by some 145,000 units in the United States. The total number of 360 consoles sold at retail was 451,700 and this number was undoubtedly helped along by the launch of Microsoft's new slim version of the 360 hardware (See June NPD results here). Revealed at E3, The Xbox 360 slim comes with a 250 GB hard drive and built-in wifi, but doesn't really add anything new that the PS3 slim doesn't have. Microsoft did give its new product a solid (if uncreative) marketing push, which helped to drive sales in a month that is traditionally fairly slow for video games.

The company chose a fairly straightforward tactic to market the new hardware, choosing to focus mainly on the slick and shiny design of the box as well as its diminutive size (see video below). We actually rather like the new design, and it gives the machine more of a high-end consumer electronics look than the old computer-case colored predecessor. But again, this is something that the PS3 console has been doing for several years already.

Microsoft has its eyes on the even more lucrative holiday shopping season which begins in late September. The company hopes that its new Kinect motion controller will help drive even more sales:

"Retail demand for the new Xbox 360 250GB console remains high, and retailers continue to order as many units as Microsoft is able to supply. Collectively, Microsoft has also heard from retailers around the US that Kinect and its related games are a top priority this holiday," the company said in a prepared statement.

We'll see if Microsoft can hold on to its sales lead in North America, but if ever there was a moment for Sony to turn the tables on its competitor, this is it.

Only country where Xbox outselling is America, anywhere else PS dominate xbox since emm... forever.

@Wuu

That is currently not true, the 360 is actually outselling the PS3 in the rest of the world as well, especially in the UK, Research before shooting off your mouth.

Actually....

 - July 19, 2010 10:22 AM

Actually Barack... you need to do your own research....

http://www.vgchartz.com/weekly.php?reg=World

The 360 is down 20% worldwide...

Anyways... what do you expect? 360 owners would be smart to trade in their old machine and buy a new slim.. at least the slim has a lower chance to RROD.

The reason that the PS3 doesn't sell as much as the Xbox 360 even though its more powerful is because POWER isn't all that MATTERS!

Xbox 360 still has a larger number of AAA exclusives, it has exclusive Call of Duty content (which is actually a big deal), and the Xbox 360's operating system makes PS3's operating system look like it was on a console from the last generation.

You PS3 fanboys need to wake up and get real. The reason the Xbox 360 sells more is because its better than the PS3. Its better than the PS3 in every single aspect except for technical specs, which doesn't really matter when a lot of developers are still having trouble making games on the PS3 that are equivalent to games on the Xbox 360 because of how oddly difficult Sony decided to make it to program games for the PS3.

You know why 360 is outselling ps3 in the USA?
Don't forget that microsoft is american... so all americans rather buy it and help and praise a national product than buy a japanese thing, simple as that.

i completely agree with joe. and also one of the main reasons is xbox live. even with the new playstation plus psn is years behind xbl. just the way everything works so smoothly on xbox is a reason. i have both and to be honest, aside from a couple games like god of war, and maybe resistance my ps3 is only used for blu ray. it really is opinion but owning both i can say im way happier with my 360 and ive owned it since launch. both sytstems. oh yea and motorstorm is one of ps3s best games. 360 doesnt have that so ill throw a few points for ps3 there

 - July 19, 2010 10:39 AM

Wow Joe... any more spin?

The PS3 has by far more AAA exclusives. Threefold as many as the 360... stop living in a dream world. I'm not even counting the fact that half of the 360 games have a better version on PC, and aren't really exclusive. When you consider that, the number is rather pathetic.

COD exclusive content is not a big deal, because you are brainwashed once again, you microdrone. It's timed exclusive, in other words, it's not exclusive and is being marketed as such. PS3 will get it eventually. Unlike every other game where exclusive content will be on PS3 only FOREVER. Dead Space 2, Assassin's Creed, Medal of Honor, Mafia 2... you get the picture.

And the XMB is a million times better than that crappy wii-ripoff operating system. Give your head a shake. The XMB currently has the most awards ever won by a console user interface. Research next time, moron.

And the PS3 makes the 360 look like a last generation system altogether. You guys are happy to finally be getting WiFi... well the PS3 has had it for years now. Kinect is the EyeToy with lague and no precision... the PS2 EyeToy, but it has games that would make a Wii fan laugh at.

And the PS3 has been outselling the 360 WORLDWIDE since launch. This small spike in sales will not last, as usual. They are just replacement units, and the figures are only decent in America. The market is not expanding for the 360, since the rest of the world doesn't back faulty crappy hardware, with no games.

And you are an idiot, devs are getting more out of the PS3, unless they have to dumb down their games to run on the 360 dated architecture. Now that the PS3 is lead console, multiplatform titles all look better on the PS3. You moron. Stop being a blind fanboy. Judge the consoles based on exclusives. Nothing on the 360 can touch Gran Turismo 5, GOD3, Last Guardian, Uncharted 2, Infamous 2, Killzone 3, Heavy Rain, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. These are all titles that could never run on the 360. period. While games that are hyped as technical marvels, like Alan Wake, that are in development for 10 years, still looks dated compared to a mediocore PS3 exclusive... that is telling.

Then you have the largest failure rate in console history. Over 60%. That's right, the majority of 360 consoles FAIL. Enough said.

You also pay for laggy multiplayer, and are essentially paying for cross game chat and the ability to access the internet you already pay for... take it with a smile kid! Just wait for the COD monthly fees, then you can pay for your internet a third time!

I'm just going to stop here, you are not worth my time, and I've just made you look like the biggest idiot on the internet.

Don't let being a fanboy blind you. You look like an idiot for it.

actually the xbox hardly sells anywhere except in america in africa hardly anyone has xbox's and inasia ps3 dominates in europe it dominates but due to the large popoulatoin of america it seems as if it sells a lot and greenberg manipulates sales figures.

Haha fanboy delusional Xbots here in these comments.

XMB primitive to Xbox OS? I tried to play a simple MPEG file from my camera on the Xbox the other day and it didn't even know it was an MPEG file. My Xbox doesn't even register my external HDD because it has been partitioned and gets confused so it doesn't show anything at all. PS3 is like oh look two HDDs.

FAIL

Wow a lot of hate going on here.

Only thing i want to say is multiplatform games usually look better on 360 because they PS3 has always been a bitch to program. Thats the main reason i but most of my stuff on my 360

Seems to me everyone who has posted here so far has been bitten by the fanboy bug.

Personally, I could care less which system does better just as long as one or the other continue to bring me top of the line, state of the art games that I can embarrass my friends in. Xbox has a few greats, as does the PS3.

Edgar

@Actually...
So I looked at your chart and it stilled showed the 360 outselling the PS3, even with a 20% decrease.

Here's a couple reason, based on my own experience of owning both consoles:

1. Controller. As an adult male, the PS3 controller is awkwardly small. I've bought FIFA for both consoles and I much more enjoy the game on Xbox only because of the controller.

2. Japanese-produced titles are lagging behind Western franchises. I know this leaves me open for the typical racist/jingoist criticism but I find that too many of Japanese games to be immature and a step behind Western-produced games, which are more predominant on the Xbox. Mass Effect is a great example.

The PS3 dominates in many areas - hardware for example, duh; but I also like the user interface more than the Xbox's juvenile dashboard.

That being said, the Xbox is simply more fun than the PS3.

So why is Xbox outselling PS3 again? Did the article answer the question? Or just state the obvious.

I'll answer it. Xbox is an american brand so many are loyal and many want to be prepared for the next fitness revolution, kinect.

 - July 20, 2010 5:44 AM

do u know why xbox is outselling ps3? because i know people who bought 2,3 xboxes because theres broke down. ps3 is more of a reliable product.. i own both and everytime i play on my xbox im always worried of it overheating while on the ps3 i have no problems. why do u think xbox never really tried fixing overheating issues? and u retards will buy another xbox after it breaks down... and yes xbox 250 s still have problems...

 - July 20, 2010 6:02 AM

Having both I can say this. PS3 needs to connect me to more people. Fighting games/FPS games especially. If I'm playing SSF4 on the day of its launch why am I lucky to find a match in 20 minutes? And going through menu upon menus to contact a friend is stupid. Out of everyone I know they are all on XBL. My ps3 has been doing nothing but collecting dust. Aside from playing blurays it does nothing for me

It does not matter what you all are saying defending your system. The truth is, the 360 has been, and continues to outsell the PS3 in the US.

Yes, worldwide is a different story, but that is not the title of the article.

And if MS is able to get people to buy replacements, good for them. People are still willing to buy them, so they must like the system.

Will PS3 eventually take over? I think so, although the 360 is lasting longer than I thought it would against the PS3, I think this holiday season will tell a lot.

Oh, and I own both...I prefer the 360 for games (Xbox Live dominates), and the PS3 for all other things.

 - July 20, 2010 7:56 AM

Its actually funny to read fanboys in here, you guys can argument whatever you want, but really??? PS3 vs X360?
Just go get a life... DLC's are the worst thing ever ( since I'm a PC user and always got things like that for free, not now since the "DLC'S", but hey I have lot of fun with the mods community )

PS3 sells more because, of the bluray driver, which makes many people buy it just to watch movies ( and I know lots of people who do this )

Talking about exclusives is just another stupid thing, because everything can run in the other console, they just are "exclusive" because of Sony & Microsoft paying lots and lots of cash just to get the "exclusive" ( which makes both company sell more consoles, so great! )

Both consoles look about the same in graphics, maybe ps3 blurs a little more, but I already saw xbox in other games blur more than ps3.

Got tired of writting so just to end this comment, I would like to say stop with these stupid "wars", its like comparing 2 bands, some will like one, and others wont, just live with that!

P.S.: I dont speak fluently english so any stupid comment on that just makes you look even more stupid and ignorant because you probably dont even speak my language

Andre

 - July 20, 2010 8:04 AM

As expected from a 'PS3' site, a lot of biased comments, and fanboyism.

I got a 360 because I liked the feel of their controller way better than the PS3. Also, it seemed like the more affordable option at the time.
I think it has grown quite considerably, with the arcade market, and all the live jazz(twitter,fb, netflix, etc), media center extender, etc. And I appreciate all that --although I wish the live features were free like on the PS.
I've heard rumors of the PSN starting to charge so that might change soon.

The average meta-critic score for PS3 exclusives is higher than the average for XBox 360 exclusives. If you like shooters, get 360, but if you like a little of everything, get PS3.

Xbox 260 continues to outsell the PS3 because people continue to replace their old broken xbox with new ones. When the new black slim xbox came out, even if their current one wasn't broken, they wanted to jump to the new one (Built In Wifi! which the PS3 has had since launch except for the 20GB I believe). Both systems have great and numerous exclusives, I'm not going to bother counting. Most AAA games are going to be cross platform nowadays. As for Xbox Live, it is a better experience. It also costs money and there are too many annoying kids on it. PS3 might be getting more kids on it now too though since it's become cheaper and more popular than it used to be. In COD on 360 you have to mute everyone, on PS3 it isn't necessary. That's a small issue but shows that xbox live is not perfect. Xbox continues to sell because the older units had poor reliability. PS3 doesn't get multiple sales to the same individual because they don't break as often. Though the cost of replacing the blu-ray drive can be daunting (~$160) if you're unlucky enough for that to happen. I know of one PS3 to die out of the 8 I know. 5 out of 10 xboxes I know of personally have failed.

@ppTheMart

"The PS3 has by far more AAA exclusives. Threefold as many as the 360." Show me proof.

"And the XMB is a million times better than that crappy wii-ripoff operating system." It's a matter of opinion, mine being better than yours, so you're wrong.

"Now that the PS3 is lead console, multiplatform titles all look better on the PS3." Proof, again? From the above article, the Xbox is still ahead.

"Nothing on the 360 can touch Gran Turismo 5, GOD3, Last Guardian, Uncharted 2, Infamous 2, Killzone 3, Heavy Rain, etc. etc. etc. etc." Good. I don't like any of those games anyways. I like games that I can have fun with, not just think they're pretty looking.

"Then you have the largest failure rate in console history. Over 60%. That's right, the majority of 360 consoles FAIL. Enough said." Hasn't happened to mine yet and I thought they took steps to fix this. Ever heard of the Jasper chip?

"You also pay for laggy multiplayer, and are essentially paying for cross game chat and the ability to access the internet you already pay for... take it with a smile kid! Just wait for the COD monthly fees, then you can pay for your internet a third time!" You must need a better internet connection when you use your Xbox mate, since there's no lag here. I also like to be connected to my friends while playing games and it's simple with XBL. Oh, have fun paying that COD monthly fee: I won't be buying it.

"I'm just going to stop here, you are not worth my time, and I've just made you look like the biggest idiot on the internet." Arguments without facts/proof behind them are simply hot air, which is what you gave us a lot of.

"Don't let being a fanboy blind you. You look like an idiot for it." Don't forget your own lesson.

Xbox 360 sells more because it offers more than the PS3.
The ps3 is a clone with zero innovation and with an online service ridiculous.
In practice ps3 must be raised by the balls!

Wow, don't be throwing stones if your house is made of glass either. Objectively read your comments, you sir, are a text book definition of a fanboy. I personally do not care about it but it is not good form to be calling out others for the same things you are doing. I own all 3 consoles. I have been gaming for over 20 years, I can honestly say that my Wii is used by my kids, the PS3 is excellent for multi media purposes, but the 360 is my preferred gaming console. Preferred meaning I do play the exclusive games on the PS3 (God of War was superb), I even rent some cross platform titles and play them but that is a rarity. 90% of my gaming is done on the 360, why? Because the UI IMO is better, LIVE is still ahead of the PSN, so I have to pay 50 dollars a year. I can scrounge up less than a dollar a week to support this. I am also being honest when I say that the online experience with games is overall much better than the PS3.
I do not care about numbers, research, or any other of that non sense. Remember research also said we would all be screwed when the year rolled to 2000, Enron was a good company to invest in, Iphone 4 has a great antenna, and Toyotas had great gas pedals....
I am a grown adult and I have come to realize, you get what you pay for. Electronics, cars, furniture, toys, food, everything. I am willing to pay 50 dollars for a better online experience, and while some may say there is no difference, there is a huge one for me. Again, I speak for no one but myself.
Your commnets on the Kinect are totally biased and very loosely based on "research". Both cameras for the PS3 and 360 were gimmicks to begin with. Nothing more.
While I will agree with you that devs are now developing games for the PS3 with alot more ease, it is still more difficult which means they need to utilize more resources, time and money.
to your point about the failure rate, yes, it is horrible, but I have gone through 5 consoles, and I still prefer my 360 to game on, as do many others. So what does that say? If people are still willing to deal with the 360, even after the RRoD?? Do I really need to explain that to you??

So to sum it up. The xbox is great for games
PS3 is great for multi media
Wii is good for anyone under the age of 12 or over the age of 60.

By the way, does it really matter what the rest of the world is dong when it comes to consoles??? Are you going to purchase your console based upon what some people is Iceland or Europe are doing??

Alright lets be fair here. The PS3 has a much better collection of Single Player games, Uncharted 2, God of War, Heavy Rain, etc. The 360 is great for online because of Xbox Live but it isnt that much further ahead the the PSN now. But Halo, Gears of War, exclusive Call of Duty content, the online experience is definitely better on the 360, which I guess American gamers care more about than the rest of the world.

Greg

 - July 20, 2010 9:44 AM

Erm, let me get a few things straight because I think most of the comments so far have had little justification other then 'fanboy, fanboy, fanboy'

1st: PS3 is doing exceptionally well in most other countries excluding America and a few others, that's expected, it has nothing to do with patriotism.

2nd: The 360 isn't lightyears better then PS3, they both have thier flaws and they both have thier strong points, the very fact that PS3 has almost caught up from a position everyone thought Sony would never recover from should be enough proof. The OS is old, but guess why it hasn't chnaged, erm, maybe because it was awarded for being so simple from the get go and doesnt need to change, its fluent, its easy to use and find things and best of all, it allows you the freedom of putting up your own wallpapers, it doesnt need to change as much as 360s has, 360s first one was rubbish to be honest IMHO, since NXE it has been far better and even praise-worthy, but until it has recieved any award like the PS3 OS has, you have nothing to say about it.

3rd: Live is superb in every way, thats a given, saying that though, PS3 isn't quite on par with PSN, but that doesnt mean PSN isn't superb too, it may not be as great as Live, but I have yet to find something to complain about recently, yeah there are a few things I would like that Live has, but what PSN has atm that 360 doesnt is free multiplayer, that to me is the most crucial part of online gameplay, everything else are just bonuses, I just want to know that I can play against mates with or without PSN+.

4th: PS3 has more AAA exclusive titles, 360 has more exclusive titles, choose your poison.

5th: Come off it, noone uses thier PS3 purly for Blu-ray anymore, so either you are lying about that or lying about having a PS3, blu-ray players are cheaper then PS3 now, plus there are more then enough superb games on PS3 to keep you occupied, if you have money to waste on a PS3 just to use it to play blu-ray, quite frankly you're a plank.

BTW, I have both consoles. I play more on my Xbox, but I love them both.

For all the people who says Xbox sells more because of the red rings issue. I say that is not true. Mine red ringed 4 times and was replaced for free by MS. How do you explain the fact that most of the top selling games are sold to Xbox owners? To me it shows a lot of things, but the one thing I know is that people only buy games if they have something to play it on...

Notable PS3 2010 Exclusives:
The Last Guardian
God of War III
Heavy Rain
Gran Turismo 5
Modnation Racers
MAG
The Agency

Notable Xbox 360 2010 Exclusives:
Mass Effect 2
Fable III
Halo Reach
Splinter Cell: Conviction
Crackdown 2
Alan Wake
Limbo (XBLA)

Looks like PS3 has a VERY slight edge this year, although you must note that Forza Motorsport 3 has been out for a while, whereas GT5 is in continued development.

Just buy both consoles if you like video games. Play the MP non-exclusives on 360 and watch Blu-Rays on your ps3. Quit being cheap fanboys.

Some people have said this, but the reason xbox outsells ps3 in America is because American's culture is more competitive. People in America love Competitive gaming and xbox offers a better online community. Plain and simple. Maybe Xbox has made more sales because their xbox's keep breaking, but doesn't that give credit to microsoft, and take away from sony, if people's boxes are breaking and they would still rather buy another xbox instead of a ps3?

Ryan k

 - July 20, 2010 12:14 PM

You all get on my nerves. I really hate these pathetic attempts to persuade the ms community to realize the ps3 has value too, and vice versa. Like the other guy said I own all three and primarily game only on the 360...with that said I also own or rented any good ps3 exclusives. However if it came out on xbox I usually prefer getting that version. For the dumbass who didn't believe the ps3 is used only for blue ray I can think of a reason to drop the cash on the ps3 over the new cheaper players. Firmware and software updates...without them many disc won't play at all. While all companies have some sort of solution ps3 fixes the issues without me having to deal with the bs of ordering a disc to do the updates myself. It's hard to compare these systems since they both excel in certain areas, but for now the 360 is the best for my gaming needs. to close I'd like to say i own two xbox 360s and if either broke I'd be out pawning my ps3 so fast it'd make you fan boys heads spin. also psn sucks my balls, xbl IS online gaming.

It doesn't matter which console a game comes out on, it'll always be better on pc. The simple fact is you have more user modification and patching on pc, and the capability of a lot better hardware.

If only the 360 would have built-in bluray...PS3 sales would hit rick bottom. I know many people who arent really gamers, but buy the PS3 anyway because of the bluray feature. Like Sony would let Microsoft do that...that would be the death of the PS3
