Videogame Sales on the Rise

chart-t.jpg

My boy's all grown up and on its way to global domination. According to recent figures, worldwide videogame revenue has exceeded that of DVD and Blu-Ray in 2008.

Market research company Media Control GfK International reported that global sales of packaged media earned $61 billion in 2008, with games cutting out 53% of the pie, while DVD and Blu-Ray grabbed 47%. Videogames are expected to grow to 57% in 2009. Videogame sales rose to 20% in 2008, boosted by Nintendo's Wii strong showing in the burgeoning casual market, whereas disc-based movie sales dropped 6%.

The games industry might not be recession-proof, but at least it's proving its chops to its older siblings and now leads the pack as global entertainment providers.
