Sony had it right? Who would've guessed? Well, Lucas DeWoody guessed. A biased source? Maybe, but an interesting article nonetheless. Here's a highlight.

"The transition to HD won’t be the massive “all-at-once” explosion we saw with DVD. People needed DVD in 2000. They don’t need Blu-Ray yet in 2007. DVD’s predecessor lasted nearly 25 years before being phased out. Will Blu-Ray wait that long? Likely not, yet when as the time nears, we’ll see a steady increase in PS3 sales and a resulting rise in market share.

Will Blu-Ray hand Sony the victory in the end as far as the game market is concerned? No. Wii has practically laid an uncontested claim to that throne already. Blu-Ray will, however, deliver Sony a lot of money (and marketshare) in the not "Blu-Ray is Sony’s Wii Remote—in other words, it’s Sony’s unique feature that gives the consumer incentive to purchase the console."so distant future when the transition to high-definition starts to ramp up. It will just be some time before Sony sees the fruits of that transition. The shift won’t be widely documented, and the media probably won’t even notice the gradual transition until it is well in effect, but Sony’s gamble will pay off eventually when the time to actually move to the better format arrives. "
