Square Enix Plans to Buy Tecmo

It seems that the Japanese mega-publisher is going on a bit of a shopping spree of late. Having already purchased rival company Taito in 2005, Square Enix today announced plans to buy out Tecmo. Tecmo is best known for its work on the Dead or Alive series (including our favorite Beach Volleyball spinoff) and the Ninja Gaiden games. As some commenters have already pointed out, this buy-out would make Square a real console software powerhouse, adding genres OTHER than RPGs to the company's already impressive portfolio.

Square Enix has registered the company's desire to purchase a controlling amount of Tecmo stock at 30% above market price, and the Tecmo board of Directors has until September 4 to accept or reject the offer.
