Sony PS3 Dominated Holiday 2009

There might have been an economic crisis going on, but you wouldn't know it based on Sony's incredible performance this past holiday at retail. The company boasted 3.8 million units of its flagship console sold worldwide during the five weeks leading up to the New Year. This corresponded to a remarkable 76% Increase compared to the previous year, and marks the most successful holiday season in the history of the Playstation 3.

Undoubtedly, much of this increase can be attributed to the recent price drop and introduction of the PS3 slim model. There have also been a flurry of great games released for the system this year, making it more appealing to Sony's core fanbase. Uncharted 2 was one of the standout exclusive releases for the system, and the upcoming Gran Turismo 5 is also likely to be a system seller. After several years of desultory results at retail, it seems as though the tide has finally turned in Sony's favor int he so-called console war, which has Sony's machine in competition with Microsoft's Xbox 360, the current sales leader in North America.

Not content to rest on its past successes, Sony has a plan to continue its push to gain market share:

"In 2010, SCEI will continue to deploy various measures to further expand the PS3 software line-up, including highly anticipated titles such as God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, MAG, Heavy Rain and ModNation Racers. The company will also vigorously enhance the network content and services, while tapping into a wider audience through the introduction of a new Motion Controller supported with a variety of software titles as well as delivering outstanding 3D experience in homes with 3D stereoscopic games and movies, that is possible only on the PS3 platform."
