Sony Platforms Drove Konami Profits in Q1 2010

While many third-party publishers have complained of sluggish sales and rampant piracy on Sony's PSP handheld, at least one company is profiting from the platform. Unsurprisingly, that publisher is Konami, whose Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker game was one of the major hit releases this spring. Peace Walker is estimated to have sold around 1.2 million copies worldwide since launch, with the majority of those in Japan. Having recently released revenue numbers for Q1 2010, we can see that the PSP system was the major earner for Konami, bringing in 40% of the company's revenue. Does this mean that we can expect more portable games -- and perhaps even more Metal Gear -- from the Japanese publisher? Almost assuredly. However, we also see a significant bias towards Sony systems in the numbers below, which together make up 66% of Konami's total sales.

Here is the full breakdown of Konami's earnings by hardware plaform:

Platform June 2010 Quarter

PSP 40% (1,848,000)

PS2 9% (415,800)

PS3 17% (785,400)

DS 18% (831,600)

Wii 12% (554,400)

X360 3% (138,600)

PC 2% (92,400)

Total 4,620,000 (100%)
