Due to shortages of blue laser diodes, a key component of Blu-ray pick-up heads, and cell processors, Sony may only be able to ship half as many PS3's as planned for '06. According to an article from DigiTimes, sources in Taiwan's game console manufacturing industry Sony's OEM makers in China and Japan are still preparing for production of the PS3, and are noting that the difficulty in acquiring the needed components in volume may lead to the shortages. Sony has yet to comment on these reports, but has previously stated that they are on track to deliver the expected 4 million units by year's end, with another 2 million hitting the market by March '07.
