Smaller, More Efficient Graphics Chips Coming For PS3

The PS3 is already an efficient, quiet-running machine, but according to Sony it is about to become even more so.

At the PlayStation Business Review yesterday in Tokyo, company CEO Kaz Hirai said that manufacturing would move toward smaller 65 nm RSX graphics chips as early as this fall.

"The Cell and RSX used in PS3s at launch were manufactured using a 90nm process technology. And now all PS3 Cells have shifted to 65nm process technology since last holiday season.”

The 65 nm chips are also cheaper to produce, and this means that the most direct impact for consumers will be cheaper hardware. Many consumer electronics manufacturers have been pushing to develop the smaller, less expensive chips. Microsoft already moved to 65 nm chips for the main CPU in its Xbox 360 game console in the fall of 2007.
