Should Sony Rush To Release PS4 Before Xbox 360 Successor

The next generation of video game consoles is rapidly approaching, as Sony and Microsoft are both hard at work on follow-ups to the Sony PS3 as well as the Xbox 360. Hypothetically speaking though, would Sony benefit from releasing the PS4 before the Xbox 720?

Nintendo has already confirmed that the follow-up to the Nintendo Wii will launch during the holiday shopping season in 2012.

That means the Nintendi WiiU will be on store shelves one-year from now pretty much, but what about Microsoft and Sony?

The Xbox 360 is in its 6th year, and it is no secret that Microsoft is hard at work on the successor. There have been rumors that the next-gen follow-up would be launching as soon as next November, going head-to-head with the launch of the Nintendo WiiU.

The Sony camp does not seem quite as rushed though, as it is expected that the PlayStation 4 is at least 2-years away, with the most likely release date being October of 2013. Would Sony benefit though from bumping up the release a year, or waiting it out?

With the Sony PS3, the launch came a year after the Xbox 360, and it has taken Sony a long time to make up ground even though the console is technically superior from a hardware perspective to the Xbox 360.

Sony releasing the PS4 head-to-head with the Xbox 720 would be great for consumers, as the two computers would likely battle it out on price as well as launch exclusives, meaning gamers would benefit overall.

For Sony though, it just does not make sense. Microsoft will be catching up to even the Sony PS3 with the Xbox 720, as they will likely be adding Blu-ray, and other hardware improvements.

Sony, giving itself another year, will be able compete better on price, and really be able to utilize the extra year to improve upon the PlayStation Network in many ways, a key advantage currently to the Xbox 360 as Xbox Live continues to expand.

Though Sony has the ability to do so, waiting it out and seeing how the field plays its cards may be best before they go all-in yet again.
