Remakes: How Far Back Should Developers Go?

Looking around at the moment there are some great games out there, causing
many a gold coin to pass from me to thee - if you happen to sell games or
work in a games shop that is. When looking closely at the most recent
releases, one thing you notice is a lot of sequels and new installments of
already great games. But that's not to say there isn't the odd curveball
thrown such as Infamous, Heavy Rain and Agent. This got me thinking about
some of the greatest games from my childhood, which might even be the same
for most of you guys and gals out there. I mean, how good would it be to
see some of those classic retro games given a new lease on life with some
next gen graphics, new solid campaigns, online co-op and competitive
features all tied in with some great marketing and possible the original
title to boot. The game which I was intending the start off with was going
to be Castlevania, however Hideo Kojima is already surgically enhancing
this game and I can see him reaching for the resuscitation equipment as
Castlevania has the potential to be a stunning title. Here are a few
titles that I for one would most definitely pay hard earned cash to play:

Turtle Tournament Fighters: Snes Version.
I don't know if many of you ever came across this title but as a beat em
up: it was fast paced, combo ridden and visually a colourful and well
textured title.
Characters were bold and had signature moves such as Ultras and Super
Moves. From Memory Michelangelo was my favourite as he was very much the
Ryu/Ken of the game with Shredder and Leonardo being a close second. If
they kept the game in the same stylised graphics this could be a winner.

Street of Rage [3 in particular]
This was for me one of many Co-op Games available to us when we were kids
- from memory the first game I played with this style co-op was Monster in
my Pocket on the Nes when I could only just really managed the pads.
Streets of Rage was a great game which offered a good solid campaign -
this made it even better when you charged through it with someone. Boss
battles were very comedic and all the baddies were the same - just
different names and life bars. Good memories from this game and I think if
it was done right it could be worth revisiting.

Super Probotector
Ahhh now this game had it all - The Visuals, The Soundtracks, The Goodies,
The Bosses and The Levels. Game play was fast paced but well balanced with
great weapons and character design. Boss battles were epic and seemed
genuine and felt like the developers really gave some identity. I mean the
huge robot that burst out of the wall and proceeded the chase you with
Heat Seeking Bombs and a Flame Thrower from its mouth. Great Battles and
when you did this with a buddy - man it made it even more fun - chasing
the best weapons and shield, fighting to be the one that rode the Tank and
always racing to be the one that got the last kill on the overhead split
screen missions. I loved this game and as I type this I am wondering where
my last copy of this game is hiding. Re-mastered this would have the
potential to be immense.

Metal Gear - and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
Well people I think this one writes itself - with the ideas that Hideo and
his team offer and great story telling abilities [Steady Now!] I think
these games really deserve to be remastered in the same way Metal Gear
Solid was remade for the Gamecube. Outer Heaven is worth a visit as would
the Zanzibar Incident. I can't stress how much I would enjoy playing these
chapters in up to the minute graphics.
