Rage Will Look Better on PS3 than 360, Says Developer

As the War of the Fanboys ™ rages on, id developer John Carmack has added some ammunition to the Sony side. Apparently, the upcoming shooter game Rage will look superior on the PS3, due to storage issues. Sony has long touted its high-capacity Blu-Ray storage media as the true harbinger of the “next gen”, and they may finally be proven correct. Rage uses the company's new tech5 graphics technology, which allows developers to create realistic-looking landscapes but at the cost of needing more storage room.

The Xbox 360 version will ship on two regular DVDs, but even that isn’t enough to contain all of the high-resolution textures that Carmack and his team have planned for the game. In order to fit all of the planned content on two disks, the 360 version will use a “different compression technology”. The end result, according to the developer, is that some object textures will look less sharp on the 360.

While this news will undoubtedly ignite many a flame war on the gaming forums, it will probably not have a noticeable effect on the final version of the game. Carmack admits that during most scenes, the games will look identical. It is only when exploring the nooks and crannies at the edge of the gaming world that players might find “a rock that is more blurry at the periphery of Rage’s world”.
