According to the official PlayStation 3 preview site, the upcoming console will need an adapter to read PS2 memory cards. This marks a pretty large change from the PS2, which was obviously equipped out of the box to read PSone cards, since they used the same style of connectors. From the site:
To use saved data on a PlayStation 2 memory card, you must copy the data onto a virtual memory card within the hard disk. This requires a PS2/PSone memory card adaptor to copy the data to your PLAYSTATION 3. A memory card adaptor is designed to edit, up/download game saves to and from EMS flash card or smart media card.
No word yet on whether Sony plans to include the adapter in the PS3 package, release one themselves, or let third-parties make adapters.
