A recent The New York Times article takes a look at Sony's strategy for online connectivity on the PlayStation 3. Although exact details about Sony's planned free online service have thus far been scarce, more information is expected to be released Oct. 19 at a Sony media event in San Francisco. According to the article, Sony is actually building two different networks, one for online gaming and another to handle transactions of downloadable games and extra content. In addition, Sony is allowing developers to deploy their own servers for online play if they choose, bypassing Sony's servers altogether.

“It’s huge,” said Giancarlo Varanini, news editor for The Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine. “They’re basically changing their entire outlook with online with the PS3.”

Sony believes that it already has the lead in the online arena thanks to the online PlayStation 2 community of three million customers.

“Online is relevant and it will become more relevant over time, but it’s not the biggest thing to be excited about the next generation,” said Jack Trenton, the co-chief operating officer of Sony Computer Entertainment of America. “Every PS3 owner should be able to plug in Day 1 and take full advantage of everything we have to offer,” he said. “There is freedom for the development community and freedom from the consumer standpoint.”
