According 9 NewsWatch, Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) has generated more than $33 million in Australian hardware and software retail sales since the video game console's local launch last month, figures show.

Analyst group Gfk, state that Sony Computer Entertainment Australia (SCEA) sold 27,083 PS3 units in the 10 days after its official Australian launch on March 23.

Data also showed launch software titles Resistance: Fall of Man, MotorStorm and Formula One Championship Edition were the three highest selling games in the week commencing March 19.

"With the PS3 now realised, the strong consumer support to date indicates that we've had a successful platform launch and are at a great starting position for us to grow and develop the PS3 platform," SCEA managing director Michael Ephraim said.

"The inclusion of a Blu-ray Disc player in the PS3 has also helped firmly launch the new disc format in Australia, with the install base growing over 40-fold in just three days."

Meanwhile, the PlayStation 2 - which is now in its seventh year - sold 7,954 units in that week following the recent launch of its pink PS2, a product aimed at broadening the female gaming market.

The PS3 launched in Japanese and US NTSC television format markets in November last year and was released in PAL format regions - which include Australia, New Zealand and Europe - in March.

Estimates put Sony's global PS3 sales since the PAL and NTSC launches at about 2.5 million units.
