PS3 Price Drop Rumored For March 2009

Here is an interesting piece of news for those thinking about picking up a PS3 this holiday season. Industry rumors suggest that Sony may be considering dropping the price of its expensive home console in March of 2009. The information allegedly leaked out of an annual staff strategy briefing held in London. A source who attended the November meeting said that Sony "plans to be more competitive" with the price of the PS3 beginning in March.

There was more juicy news to come out of this leak as well. The source claims to have seen actual footage of Uncharted 2 and God of War 3 for the PlayStation 3. The source further revealed that footage for LittleBigPlanet PSP was also shown and that Media Molecule have apparently been working on the handheld version for several months. Target footage of MotorStorm PSP (which we already knew about) was also played for the audience.

While the veracity of these claims cannot be established without official word from Sony, the timing for a potential price drop does seem reasonable. The company may already be feeling the pressure from Microsoft's recent and substantial price cuts, but may feel it is too soon to reduce the price of its hardware leading into the Christmas holidays. With a looming global recession and some hot competition, 2009 looks set to be a challenging year for hardware manufacturers.
