PS3 price cut likely says Sony Chief

One of the biggest rumours we've seen this year is the possibility of a Playstation 3 price cut. Fans and industry analysts alike have discussed and attested to the likelihood of a change Sony's marketing strategy.

It seems that this has now become a stronger likelihood following Sony's Chief Executive Sir Howard Stinger interview with the Financial Times recently [via Gaming Today], in which he revealed that Sony may be considering a drop in price.

"Nintendo Wii has been a successful enterprise, and a very good business model, compared with ours . . . because it’s cheaper. That [price cuts] is what we are studying at the moment. That’s what we are trying to refine."

This is a clear reversal of their original high risk strategy of sticking to a high price last year, but Sony needs to make some changes if they are to attain their goal of 11 million units for 2007, in light of competition from other console manufacturers market strategy, notably the Xbox 360.
