PS3 having size, OS issues?

cell-processor-t.jpg

Reports are surfacing on the web that claim Sony's PlayStation 3 is still currently too large to fit in the case that debuted at last year's E3 show, as well as reports that the PS3 OS takes up as much as 25% of the available processing power of the machine. Apparently not only is the PS3 still too large, but Sony is still bidding on components for the machine, delaying shipments of final hardware units to developers, reports the Inquirer. Other rumors that have surfaced indicate that the PS3, like rival Xbox 360, will use a background OS to handle in-game chatting and downloads. This OS is said to use up to 25% of the system's processing power and 18.75% of the available system memory. In the case of the 360, these numbers stand at 2% and 6.75%, leaving Sony with a very bloated OS if these numbers are to be believed. As usual, no official word from Sony has emerged on either of these issues.
