PS3 Greatest Hits: $29.99

greatest_icon.jpg

Sony officially kicked off its "Greatest Hits" lineup for the PS3 today, with 10 great titles making the cut. These specially priced games have really become a staple of console gaming, and represent a win-win for both software makers and consumers. We get top-quality titles at a reduced rate, and developers get to extend the shelf-life of their best games, well into the current hardware cycle. The games included on the list are: Warhawk, Motorstorm, Resistance: Fall of Man, Call of Duty 3, Fight Night Round 3, Need for Speed: Carbon, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Vegas, Assassin’s Creed, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

Continue reading to find out what we think about each of these games, and whether they are still worth your hard earned cash more than one year after their original release.

Resistance: Fall of Man
We are likely going to upset a lot of FPS fanatics when we say this, but you may want to consider giving this game a pass. Odds are that if you are an FPS fan, you've already bought and loved Resistance. If you are merely casually interested in the genre, stay away. The graphics in this first-generation PS3 title are already starting to show their age, and the multiplayer is downright punishing for n00bs. Wait for the upcoming sequel, which promises an overall better experience, to jump in. If you like it, the first game will still be there in the bargain bin waiting for you.

Fight Night Round 3
One of the best entries in the EA franchise changed up some of the core gameplay mechanics for the better. Career mode is kind of "meh", but the graphics and sound effects felt truly "next-gen" when the game first launched. If you were ever a fan of Mike Tyson's Punch Out on the NES, this game will take you right back to your friend's basement circa 1988.

Rainbow Six Vegas
The tactical gameplay from the Rainbow Six series paired up with the unusual setting of Las Vegas was a recipe for success. Ubisoft got almost everything right with this game, so fans of tactical shooters can pick this budget title up with confidence.

Assassin's Creed
Before GTA IV, Assassin's Creed was the gold standard for open-world murder simulators on the PS3. It suffered from a few rough spots, which may have turned off some potential fans. However, there is a lot to enjoy in this stealth action game, including breathtaking graphics and an innovative and accessible control scheme. With more sequels on the way, you need to get in on the ground floor of this great franchise.

Oblivion
This game set a new standard for Western RPGs in terms of scale, story, immersion and gameplay. The PS3 version was a bit late to the party, but if you didn't get to try this epic game on any other system, clear a week from your schedule and give this game a try.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma
Since Ninja Gaiden 2 is still exclusive to the Xbox 360 (boo!) this remains the best and only way to get your ninja on. Sigma took the original and made it better in every respect, with updated graphics, new bosses, and a new playable heroine. If you are a fan of ninjas and video games (and really, who isn't?), grab this title right now.

Motorstorm
Perhaps the weakest entry of the bunch, Motorstorm is also the oldest. This game was there at the launch of the PS3, and pound for pound, is a worthwhile purchase. The developer has also done a good job keeping things fresh with new downloadable vehicles and tracks. We are having trouble imagining any PS3 owner who hasn't already checked out this game, but if you haven't, now is the time.

Need for Speed: Carbon
This follow-up to Most Wanted takes urban street racing for a bit of a breather in some treacherous canyons. It retains the over-the-top story elements and FMV cutscenes from the earlier game, so if you are into that sort of thing, by all means go for it. The bottom line is that there are better racers on the PS3, and the hardcore street racing fans probably already have this title in their collections.

Call of Duty 3
Yeah, we know that COD4 is the new hotness, with its fancy graphics and modern, Middle Eastern setting. But real fans of WWII shooters would do well to remember where the series began: in the trenches of France and Germany. There isn't much in the way of multiplayer these days, but the single player campaign is good enough to provide 10 solid hours of entertainment.

Warhawk
Warhawk was already a good deal at $40, and now a great package has gotten even better. With a plethora of downloadable content and a vibrant online community, Warhawk is one of the premier multiplayer experiences on the PS3. Not only that, but developers incognito continue to support the game, with more maps and updates coming every few months.
