PS3 Gets 100 Euro Price Cut

ps3_sales_icon.jpg

Major retailers in Spain and Portugal have dropped the price of their 80 GB Playstation bundles by 100 Euros, possibly signalling the arrival of similar price cuts in the rest of Europe and North America. Online retailer Pixmania was one of the first to display the new 299 Euro price tag, avaiable for purchase only in Spain (the French and British sites are still displaying the old, higher price).

Earlier this year, we reported that such a PS3 price drop was due in the spring, but it failed to materialize as Sony cited the strong Japanese Yen and the need for profitability among the reasons it was sticking to its higher price. Now, we expect that Sony will finally reveal a price cut at the upcoming GamesCom conference in Germany on August 18th, possibly to coincide with the release of the rumored Playstation 3 Slim. However, don't expect the PS3 slim to necessarily be cheaper, since price cuts are likely to be applied to older stock in an effort to clear it our in anticipation of the new hardware.

Now might be the perfect time to jump in and buy a PS3, for those gamers lucky enough to live in sunny Spain and Portugal. The rest of us will have to wait until retailers ineviatbly follow suit in more northern climes.

It doesn't get any more real than this, folks.
