PS3 Firmware 3.30 Details: 3D Ahoy!

Don't worry, the latest firmware update from Sony won't remove any features like the last one did. In a return to sanity, the latest update 3.30 will actually add some new functionality, specfically to the trophy system. Even more exciting is the knowledge that once this update has been applied, the code to play fully 3D enahanced games is now contained inside of our shiny PS3 consoles. Of course, we'll have to wait for some actual 3D games to be released that complement our new Bravia sets. Any guesses about what the first 3D release will be? How about the upcoming Move motion fighter? How sick would it be to have both motion control AND 3D display in the same game? Our fanboy hearts are fluttering at the very thought...

Anyway, here's what is inside of the official 3.30 Firmware update:

• Trophy enhancements -- Now you can more easily sort trophies in the [Trophy Collection] and [Comparing Trophy] sections. Sorting can be done with [Trophy Collection] in the [Game Category] and also when comparing trophies with your friends in the [Friend Category]

• Trophy Folder (Title List) can be sorted by game name/ by title according to the date in which you earned your last trophy (ascending/descending)

• Add-on list (Group list) can be sorted by original/the date in which you earned your last trophy (ascending/descending)

• Trophy list can be sorted by original/trophy name/grade/date of obtaining the trophy (ascending/descending)

In addition, this update preps the PS3 system for some upcoming new features, including 3D stereoscopic gaming. Interestingly, this update does nothing to prepare the system to play BluRay movies in 3D. Hopefully that will be coming later in a different update.

Remember that customers will still have to buy a pair of Sony 3D glasses to enjoy stereoscopic gaming. These will cost upwards of $80 USD a pair.
