Price drop or bait-and-switch?

This year's E3 really was all about the games. Well, almost.

One of the loudest, nastiest thuds coming out of the biggest event in gaming is Sony's decision to lower the price on the PS3. This announcement was met with great enthusiasm and optimism from the beginning. Was Sony finally catching on, realizing that they can't sell a console for $599 and expect it to sell very well? Unfortunately not. What was first called a price drop has come out to be more of a liquidation sale. It has since come to light that Sony plans to let the current crop of 60gb Playstation consoles finish selling out at the lowered price; that SKU will then be cut entirely, leaving only the new 80gb incarnation of the console available. What first felt like a breath of fresh air now feels more like the old bait-and-switch. How will American gamers react? Buy now while they have the chance, swear off Sony entirely, or move forward as if nothing's changed? This remains to be seen.
