New Sony Cybershot Cameras Can Take 3D Pics

Here's an idea that could revolutionize the way we take pictures and share them with others: using advanced software to take a series of snapshots while the user slides the camera from side to side. By making a composite image from each of the individual and slightly off-perspective images, the camera can then piece together a stereoscopic 3D scene. There is no need for fancy optics or multiple lenses. All of this can be accomplished with the latest Sony Cyberhot cameras and some very innovative new firmware.

According to Sony, the new Exmor R CMOS Sensor inside the Cybershot WX5 and TX9 cameras captures a high-speed burst of frames as you sweep the camera from side to side. Information from up to 100 images is automatically combined to create a stereoscopic pair of frames.

Of course, it's an added bonus that the images can then be displayed perfectly on the company's range of 3D TVs. The only thing missing from the new camera is the ability to shoot 3D stereoscopic film, but they are capable of recording standard 2D movies in HD, a first for the Cybershot model range.
