In addition to announcing the November release date for the PS3, SCE head Ken Kutaragi also covered some details concerning its upcoming console. The PS3, which will arrive before Thanksgiving in all territories at a price that will not be less than $425, will indeed coincide with the launch of an Xbox Live-like online gaming service, which Kutaragi said would be called "PlayStation Network Platform." The basic level of this service will be free of charge.

Kutaragi also mentioned that the PS3 will use a 60GB hard drive, which will come pre-loaded with a Linux OS.The drive allows the PS3 to be used as a "home server" through an internet connection, and that the system will be fully "upgradeable." Although Kutaragi did confirm that the HDD will be required for all PS3 games, he failed to mention whether or not the drive will actually be included with the PS3 or whether it will be sold separately.

The console will be 100% backwards compatible, with all older titles being upscaled to high definition resolutions. Technical details such as exact resolutions were not given.

Finally, Kutaragi announced that all PS3 games will come on Blu-Ray discs, in order to help combat the software piracy currently associated with standard DVD media. This strategy is in opposition to the launch of the PS2, which did allow developers to release early PS2 games on CD instead of DVD media.
