Is Sony Pushing It With Video Delivery Prices?

Species-movie-01.jpg

Recently, Sony has been scouring through its considerable back catalog of old movies and trotting them out for special events like Halloween and more recently, Valentines day. This is a pretty good idea from a business standpoint, because Sony controls a large number of movie studios that collectively account for a repertoire of thousands of old-but-good movies. To give you an idea of the type of content we have been seeing on the company's Video Delivery Service, have a look at the Valentine's Day offerings below.

Sony says that Customers can purchase each of these titles from 'only' £5.99 to watch on their PS3 or PSP games systems. The same movies are also available to rent from £2.49.

Recent Video Delivery Service Releases:

• Cruel Intentions 1, 2 and 3 (Sony Pictures)
• Fatal Attraction (Paramount)
• My Bloody Valentine (Lionsgate)
• When Harry Met Sally (MGM)
• Indecent Proposal (Paramount)
• The Ladies Man (Paramount)
• Vanilla Sky (Paramount)
• School of Seduction (Lionsgate)
• Species II (MGM)
• Species IV: the Awakening (MGM)

Look, obviously quality and choice are not the issues here, particularly considering Natasha Henstridge's smoldering performance in the Species films. The fact that one can buy the entire DVD boxed set of Species I through IV on Amazon for £9.98 is the problem. The price for these old movies is simply way too high, considering the alternatives of grabbing them on Netflix, downloading them illegally, or simply waiting for them to come on the telly. We recommend that Sony cut their video download prices in half, if they want a realistic chance of competing with discount DVD prices in the shop.

What do our readers think? Have you been tempted by any of the content on Sony's Video Delivery Service?
