Incognito and Sony Announce Hardware 2

Incognito, Sony London Studios and Sony Liverpool are working on a new, exclusive PS3 title with the code name "Hardware 2". While we doubt that this is the super-secret unannounced title that has been making the rounds behind closed doors and astounding journalists from the BBC to the New York Times, it is nice to see another exclusive IP in development. Incognito is responsible for the massively successful Warhawk, so we have high hopes for this new title.

Hardware 2 is loosely based on the PS2 game Hardware: Online Arena. The original game was an arcade-inspired multiplayer tank battle in the spirit of Battlezone. The game was passable for an action title, but did not garner much praise from fans or the press. The developers claim that whatever pre-conceived notions gamers have about the original game, Hardware 2 will destroy them. Described as a "Next gen Carmageddon meets Twisted Metal," this project will feature destructible environments and huge multiplayer match-ups with support for up to 100 players.

The first announcement of the game was made by PlayStation Lifestyle, who had the following to say about their hands-on experience with the game:

"Just like the first hardware you’ll be able to fight in Tanks and Jeeps, Bikes and Helicopters are added in the frag competition. You can fully customize every part on your vehicle including color, items, weapons and more. The biggest change however are the environments: You can fight in a living and breathing world and you can destroy everything, you can even just kill your enemies by letting an apartment building crash into it. The damage will be unbelievable because everything is linked together, when you destroy a building it can crash onto another building and get damaged realistically."

So we've got support for massive online multiplayer, destructible environments, and a variety of vehicles to choose from. While perhaps not the groundbreaking announcement some people were waiting for, we'll take it!
