Inafune: Dead Rising 2 Keeps Time Constraint
Keiji Inafune does not have an easy job. As the Project Lead for Capcom's upcoming Dead Rising 2, he has to find creative ways to keep the Canadian developers at Blue Castle Games indoors and away from their hockey sticks. He also has to ensure that the masterpiece they are crafting for the PS3 and Xbox 360 retains all of the things that made the first game such a blast to play.
In a recent interview, Inafune revealed some details about the upcoming game. Many fans have worried about the change in main characters. In Dead Rising 2, photojournalist Frank is gone, replaced by another burly-looking man whose career is uncertain. Many players would argue that the photo mechanic in the first game was central to the gameplay experience so it will be sad to see that aspect go if the new protagonist turns out to be more handy with, say, a stunt bike than a telephoto lens.
On the other hand, Inafune did let slip that one important aspect from the first game is here to stay -- time management, which was a much-maligned feature of the first game is "core" to the Dead Rising experience, he said. That means we can expect more frantic dashing against the clock in this sequel. We have to admit that at first, we were a bit disappointed to hear that developers will be leaving this mechanic in the game. However, after long reflection, we realized that it wasn't the time mechanic per se that was the problem, it was the broken save system. The ability to save ourselves into a corner, with no reasonable way of reaching the next objective was the real issue with th first game. Hopefully Inafune and Blue Castle will keep this in mind and provide an elegant solution that takes away some of that frustration.
We will have lots more on the new Dead Rising sequel soon, so keep checking back at Gameflavor.com
