How To Get Your PS3 To Run Linux, Free Apps

gf-kratos-t.jpg

The Sony PlayStation 3 is one powerful piece of hardware, powerful enough that it can easily run an operating system such as Linux, along with many free homebrew applications. Just how hard is it though to get Linux up and running on your PS3, not hard at all!

The first step to getting Linux up and running on your Sony PS3 so that you can enjoy free apps is to back-up your console. This can and should be done to an external hard drive or other USB storage device.

Once that is complete via the built-in PS3 utility, you can then proceed to getting Linux up and running on your console.

Ubuntu is the Linux of choice here, and is the easiest to get running.

You can quickly and painlessly download an installation kit from the Internet, and burn it to a CD or DVD.

Burning can be done via many free programs, including ImgBurn.

Once this is done, you will have a bootable disc that you can pop in your PS3.

With your disc ready, all you need to do now is to set up a partition on your hard drive for the new OS.

Going to System Settings on your PS3, you can choose Format Utility and then click Custom. You can then choose to partition off 10GB or so for the new OS.

In the Settings menu in the PS3, you can then choose Install Other OS and away you go from your bootable drive.

From here you will be able to run all sorts of programs that were not possible before, making it a PC all in itself.
