Fan Boy/Girl War: In many ways this is a driving force

The Fan Boy/Girl War - is there anything that has more dedication and
followers than this? I mean it's a serious issue but for all its
negatives it also provides a great deal of positives. In the good old days
you got a system and played the games you enjoyed, the system was simply
that and it didn't evolve or really change it just remained static and if
it was 'out flexed' by another console that was simply that. These days
consoles are becoming more of a living and breathing piece of technology.
Take all three major consoles on the market. The user interfaces, the looks, the
price, the features and benefits are all an evolved version of themselves.
Think of how your console looked at its launch stage and look at it again
- whether it be the physical look, the opening screen and features, the
menus - you get the idea?

The Wii for example from a Fanboy perspective would hang on the argument
that innovation is the reason its sales have surpassed the other two and
that this is the best feature. As a response to this the PS3 and 360 now
have their own versions of innovation on the horizon with many a developer
interested - maybe HD Ports could be on the horizon and as a result this
would pull the Wii Fan Boys argument apart (but you see where I am coming
from). Please don't view this as flame bait but as an observation.

My thought is it feels like all the hardware teams seem to put out a great
console and then watch what happens. Most of the new features and
innovation seem to stem from a Fan Boy Verb-War which in turn isn't the
best but is what makes this generation of gaming feel like it moving at
such a pace. With rumours flying around about the PS4 and Xbox 720 when
the current consoles are only just starting to settle down and crave the
style, niche and stamp of the industry and that as a comment shows the
pace of the gaming world.

Competitive is a word that describes gaming but in a positive way as we
the gamer get the benefits here as the war of the consoles can only really
be a good thing. At the moment none of the three are sitting there
thinking they have conquered anything and that for me is a great thing to
behold. Gaming as never stretched as far as it does now with nearly
everyone having access to one if not more of the consoles, all having a
loyal following with all of them fighting to be the best from all angles.

I truly think that the Fan Boy War has a little to do with this as devs
must be looking at the ideas, the critical views both positive and
negative as well as arguments which in turn stem for what feature a
console does or doesn't have. The main thing is that we all remember why
we game in the first place and that this is the main and true focal point
for the Gaming Industry as one day the accountants may get in and realize
how much MORE money they could make from us!

The war is far from over but it will be very interesting to see how things
progress over the coming few years. In my honest opinion I think we have
never had it so good. All the consoles endure peaks and troughs and all
have something to offer all in different ways. A true gamer knows this
whether they get involved in rants at all - it's all about the game.
