Duke Nukem Forever: Why is this so Awesome?

Those lucky enough to be invited to a special event at this year's London Games Festival will be the first in the UK to get their hands on the upcoming Duke Nukem game. The demonstration will take place on 7th October at The Red Room in Hyde Park, central London. A representative from Gearbox Software will be on hand to answer any potential questions that come up, such as: "Why is this so awesome?" If its anything like the version that was shown earlier in September at the Penny Arcade Expo, this demo will have players laying a can of whoopass down on a giant alien boss in a football stadium, followed by an outdoor vehicle section. The final game is slated to be released sometime in 2011, which we take to mean that it is a good year away. But, after waiting so long, that doesn't seem like such an unbearable wait anymore, does it?

Imagine the feeling of rolling up your sleeves and taking control of what may be the longest-awaited game in the history of the world. We imagine that it would feel something like sliding into the leather racing seats of a Lamborghini Countach alongside the likes of Anna Kournikova.

But Duke Nukem Forever is not just the stuff of adolescent fantasy: Rescued from vaporware status earlier this year after a legal dispute left the ill-fated project in limbo, it finally looks as if 2K games is going the publish the thing.

The question is, rocking an outdated graphics engine and gameplay mechanics from the N64 era, does anybody under 30 actually care about this game anymore? And, regardless of age, can any British gamer possibly handle the awesomeness that is the Duke?
