Bioshock PS3 Patched to Improve Textures

Bioshock_ps3-icon.jpg

When a demo for the upcoming Bioshock PS3 was released to the gaming community, the result was probably not what developers 2K Games had hoped for. Fans immediately pointed out that the textures in many parts of the game looked particularly pixellated, in some cases displaying big blocks of color where there should have been painstakingly-crafted rust marks. It seems as though the folks at 2K agreed with critics, and they have gone back to create a "day 0" patch that will correct the problem as soon as players connect their PS3 game to the internet. As you can see from the screenshot below, the problem was very real and quite unbecoming of a current-generation game.

Here is what spokesperson Elizabeth from 2K games had to say to fans last week:

"I have good news from the dev team about a patch for BioShock PS3! They have been working on a patch to address the concerns some of you on the forum have talked about. As work is in progress I do not have a definite date for when this patch will be released as it needs to be tested and clear certification with Sony before it is scheduled and released. I do know this will not be until after the game’s launch, and I will update you with details on that date as I receive them."

The patch contains fixes for two major problems that were detected in the demo:

Big Daddy Bouncer and Elite Bouncer Textures Appeared Pixelated
The patch provides a fix for an issue where large blocky pixels would show up whenever viewing the Bouncer and Elite Bouncer variants of the Big Daddy.

White Bars
The patch provides a fix for an issue where white/discolored bars would show up at the right and bottom sides of the screen during the plane crash / water scene at the beginning of the game.

We are happy to see that 2K Games takes feedback from gamers so seriously, and we applaud them for their committment to making this release look as close as possible to the Xbox 360 version. It will be interesting to see how well this game sells this holiday season, with such a broad array of quality titles coming out during the same time frame.
