Assassin’s Creed may have been one of the most anticipated games for the PS3 of 2007. From what was shown on the trailers, gamers were able to visually experience its brilliant graphics, potential gameplay, and an idea of its storyline. However, with this much hype behind the game, the problem seems to be: is there TOO much hype?
A couple of days after the game was released, reviews of the game were posted on the internet. With the hype behind the game, it was sure to make a huge impact on the gaming industry, right? Wrong. Many gaming websites were disappointed with the game, such as IGN who gave Assassin’s Creed a mere 7.5 out of 10 for the PS3. Where did the game go wrong?
I decided to find out on my own why Assassin’s Creed did not live up to the hype. I interviewed gamers who actually beat the game within the span of the week. “Was the game that easy?” was what I asked myself. Gamers said it contained many repetitive gameplay. The missions contain the same type of goal, which is to assassinate through stealth. The gamers I interviewed claimed that it became a little tiring to them as they kept doing the same thing. Despite the brilliant graphics and the innovative gameplay, they felt that the game was missing something.
In addition, the PS3 version and the 360 version differ gameplay wise. Gamers stated that the 360 version seemed to be smoother than the PS3 version. For a game that was meant for the PS3, the 360 version of Assassin’s Creed seemed to be better as IGN gave it a 7.7 which is .2 higher than the score they gave for the PS3 version. What went wrong? Wasn’t Assassin’s Creed meant for the PS3? If so, why do more gamers prefer the 360 version rather than the PS3 version? I decided to see for myself.
I tested the PS3 version of Assassin’s Creed. It was enjoyable at first as I was amazed at its lifelike graphics. However, after a couple of hours, I started to become a little tired at the repetitive mission of assassinating while also using stealth. After testing the PS3 version, I played the 360 version. Not only did I find myself a little more comfortable playing it, but I also noticed smoother movements in little details for the character. It seems that Assassin’s Creed is better suited for the 360.
If these factors were not disappointing enough, the ending of the game also let gamers down. One gamer claimed that it “left [him] hanging.”
Overall, this game may have fallen short of expectations towards gamers who believed that it would help save the PS3. However, that does not mean that the game is not worth trying out as this game may appeal to others who just want to experience what the PS3 is capable of.
If you are a “hardcore” gamer looking to get the full PS3 experience, check out Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune which received a rating of 9.1 from IGN. If you got Assassin’s Creed for the PS3 as a Christmas present, play it for a while and see if you like it. If you don’t, trade it in for Uncharted. You won’t be disappointed.
