One Word Review: Modern Warfare 2

We're going to put our normal disclaimer right up front because we know this one is going to be controversial: This is a light-hearted take on video game reviews. If you're looking for an in-depth analysis of the pros and cons of a game, this is not it. If you're in a humorous mood and enjoy flame-tastic message board discussions, make yourself at home.

After reading our review, you may laugh, you may cry, or you may feel the need to demand the 30-seconds of your life you wasted back. Our comments section is a great place to post your angry letters or vent, either to defend or rail against the game. Do not continue reading if pregnant or suffering from a serious heart condition, unless cleared by your doctor. Again, this is a not a serious review. It is a parody. It is not meant to adequately summarize the merits of a game or how well it plays. What it serves to do is excite discussion and help players understand the type of the game they're buying. This review tries to capture -- in one-word -- the essence of a hot new game. Think of it as word association. It's essentially the first word that comes to mind when thinking about that game. And it may describe the sort of gameplay or experience you can expect, ad nauseam.

Alright, now onto our review of Modern Warfare 2, Activision's latest incarnation of the Call of Duty franchise, and arguably the biggest release of November 2009.

Our one-word review of Modern Warfare 2 is (drum-roll please):

Overhyped

If you want a more thoughtful analysis of the merits of MW2, there is a great one here and another piece here.

You can also check out our other recent one-word reviews of Uncharted 2 and Brutal Legend, if you have the stomach for it.

The biggest game of 2009 is finally here. Does it live up to your expectations?

This demands a one word reply:

honestly, i disagree with it being overhyped...just like your review of Uncharted 2, you really need to step up your game ...maybe you use one word reviews, because you lack the ability to fully develop a quality review. modern warfare, along with uncharted 2 are by far two of the best games so far this year, with high quality action, graphics, dialogue and AI systems that surpass many of their predecessors and oter games within their genre...the meer fact that my squad mates actually can identify where enemies are camped out, relay that info to me and actually cover/flank the positions while i help out makes MW2 an incredible game..

I'd agree, I only bought the game cause farcry 2 was going to be dead after mw2 came out.

The multi-player is a camp/grenade fest. I don't particularly enjoy it much but its where the people are so bad stats and all thats where I am till bad company 2 comes out or something else like farcry 3 or crysis 2 whatever.

I would admit not being one who fancy's co-op that much that spec-ops is really fun. I went through about the first ten missions with a buddy on veteran and had a blast playing it.

As for single player, I won't play it till i get the 30 second pit completion achievement... My best was 30.5 its absurd!

I have to agree, this game really doesn't off much more than the first Modern Warfare did. Some of the levels in the single player mode were cool but the game has one really freaking annoying things about it... the spawn system... in single and multi-player is terrible. In single player in will spawn you right in the middle of a firefight you just died in only to die over and over again. In multi-player it tries to place you close to the guy that just killed you which in turn will more than likly have you killed again if you're not quick on your feet. Its fun overall but not worth the hype.
