FolkLore Preview

Even though my Japanese is about as good as a Disney Channel Sit-Com (oh, burn!) that did not stop me from trying out the Japanese demo of Folklore.(or Folksoul, depending on where you live)

The graphics may be eye-catching with lots of bright foliage against a darker background but the combat is forgettable. I don’t know too much Japanese and therefore couldn’t follow the story much, so I’ll leave that part alone. The combat seems more reminiscent of 3-D Castlevania games rather than great action titles like Devil May Cry and God of War, which is a shame. The combat consists of you stealing enemies’s souls and then using their power against them. (Sounds like Mega Man to me) These powers get stronger as you absorb more souls and fulfill certain requirements. But I couldn’t help feeling that some of the game’s potential was squandered by the soul sucking ability. Sure, it sounds unique but the absence of being able to perform awesome combos just left me wanting to play a better action game. Hopefully this game goes through some major overhauls before being released at the end of the year.
